This introductory course surveys important contemporary issue-areas that shape the current state of international politics. The subjects students explore are quite diverse and may include the growing relevance of non-state actors, human rights protections, genocidal violence and third-party intervention, transnational terrorism, global trade and development, democratization, prevailing inequalities and injustices, population growth and migration, various environmental issues, and so forth. This reading- and writing-intensive course is designed not only to make students more informed about the myriad global issues with which our generations are struggling, but also to be able to critically evaluate the causes and effects of these interconnected foreign policy problems; and to make reasonable judgments about why these issues are important and how they may be successfully resolved.
